Ballarat Residents Drive Major Expansion of Local Arts Programs

More than 400 Ballarat residents gathered at the Wendouree Centre for Performing Arts on July 10 to finalise schedules for three new community-run festivals set to open in September.

The timing follows a steady rise in regional funding for arts programs after federal allocations announced in late 2025, which has pushed groups here to claim more control over programming instead of waiting for outside curators.

Local groups map out new routes

The Ballarat Cultural Collective meets weekly above a shopfront on Sturt Street and has formal ties with the Art Gallery of Ballarat for shared exhibition space on Lydiard Street North. Its members also run pop-up workshops inside the former mining cottages along Eureka Street, turning those buildings into temporary studios each Saturday morning.

Records from the collective show membership climbed from 180 people in January 2025 to 620 this month, with annual dues set at $30. Attendance at its open planning nights has averaged 85 participants since the first session in March 2024.

Next steps for residents

Anyone can join the next open meeting on the first Tuesday in August at the Ballarat Library on Doveton Street, where organisers will distribute application forms for stall space at the September events. Details appear on the collective noticeboard at the Regent Theatre box office.
