Ballarat Sports Centre Gets Major Upgrade for Better Access

Local builder S.J. Weir has started the second stage of upgrades at Ballarat Sports Events Centre, focusing on access paths, broadcast facilities and floor protection for large events.

The timing aligns with the venue’s role as a year-round hub for community sport in Ballarat. Families, school groups and recreational players rely on the centre outside the main NBL1 season, and the current works aim to keep those activities running smoothly while the improvements take place.

The project sits within the Regional Sports Infrastructure Program and covers three separate work packages. This middle package includes new pedestrian routes from the bus stop to the entrance, updated accessibility features, a mobile broadcast platform and carpet tiles to shield the courts during big events. Earlier stages already delivered swipe-card entry, an upgraded scoreboard, extra CCTV, wall speakers and roof solar panels.

Keeping community sport running

Ballarat Sports Events Centre remains home to the Ballarat Miners men’s and women’s teams and to Basketball Ballarat programs that draw players of all ages. The venue also hosts community competitions and casual use, so the upgrades are designed to minimise disruption during the summer period when many local clubs are active.

S.J. Weir, a Ballarat company with more than a century of regional work, was chosen for this stage. Its past projects in the city include the City Hall restoration and the Federation University Sports Science Building, giving it direct knowledge of local conditions and user needs.

What comes next for users

Remaining stages will address the show court, broadcast and lighting systems plus heating and cooling. All works are scheduled for completion in mid-2026.
