Free fitness sessions for older Ballaratians are expanding, with the City of Ballarat funding group exercise programs at multiple sites. The move aims to make structured physical activity accessible to residents who may have been deterred by cost or solo exercise.

Where and what's on offer

The flagship program includes guided low-impact walking groups at the Ballarat Botanical Gardens, with a circuit following the lakeside path around Lake Wendouree, which is flat and accessible. A seated strength and balance class is held at the Sebastopol Neighbourhood House for those who find sustained walking difficult. Ballarat Health Services is a program partner, helping design exercise sequences to reduce fall risk. There is also a Chair Yoga session at the Ballarat Aquatic and Lifestyle Centre, incorporated into the council's Active Ageing calendar.

Why the evidence backs this approach

Investing in such programs is supported by evidence that group exercise can reduce fall risk and improve mental health outcomes. Social isolation compounds physical health issues, and programs with a social component tend to achieve better attendance.

Residents wanting to join any of the programs can register through the City of Ballarat's Active Ageing team by calling the council or visiting the customer service centre. Most sessions require no pre-registration and welcome drop-in participants, though the seated strength class has limited places and coordinators recommend calling ahead. The full schedule is posted on the council's website and available in printed form at Ballarat Library. For anyone with specific health conditions or recent injury, checking in with a GP or physiotherapist before starting is a sensible first step.
