Ballarat residents have increased use of outdoor lap facilities at the Wendouree Aquatic Centre on Gillies Street since early June. The centre maintains a 50-metre heated outdoor pool with six dedicated lap lanes open from 6am daily.

July temperatures in Ballarat average 11 degrees, yet the push for outdoor exercise continues. Ballarat Health Services launched its winter wellness campaign on 1 July that promotes water-based activity to reduce joint strain compared with road running on the Rail Trail.

Key locations for consistent laps

The Wendouree foreshore provides access to the aquatic centre pool and a separate 25-metre training lane section. Swimmers share the site with Lake Wendouree rowing crews who train most mornings. Further east, the Ballarat Botanical Gardens lakeside walk connects to restored rock pools along the Yarrowee River bank near the old tram depot. These shallow natural basins allow 20-metre repeat swims for technique work when the main pool reaches capacity.

Both sites sit within 3 kilometres of the city centre and link directly to the Ballarat Rail Trail cycling path. The trail offers a flat 1.8-kilometre ride from the gardens entrance to the aquatic centre car park.

Current access and usage figures

Adult entry at the Wendouree pool stands at $7.20 per session as of 11 July 2026. Last month the centre recorded 3,140 lap-swimming visits, up 18 per cent from May. The rock pools remain free but carry a 30-minute time limit during daylight hours to manage crowds.

Swimmers should check water quality reports posted each morning on the City of Ballarat website before using the river pools. Ballarat Health Services advises a five-minute warm-up walk along the lakeside path before entering the water and recommends bringing a buddy for any session longer than 30 minutes.
