Eureka Centre Ballarat: The Stockade, the Flag and Australian Democracy
The Eureka Centre Ballarat on Eureka Street in Ballarat East commemorates the Eureka Stockade of December 1854, widely regarded as a defining moment in Australian democratic history. The centre displays the original Eureka Flag, on long-term loan from the Art Gallery of Ballarat since 2013, alongside an exhibition about the events of the stockade and their legacy. The gallery owns the flag but does not display it. The site of the original stockade is marked by commemorative structures and is free to visit. The Eureka Centre and museum carry an entry fee; the outdoor site and interpretive signage are free. The area is a short walk or drive from the Ballarat CBD and Sovereign Hill.
