Ballarat hosts two major annual cybersecurity conferences, BSides Ballarat for beginner and intermediate awareness and skills and MRE for advanced malware analysis, to boost regional cybersecurity awareness.
This dual approach stands out because many global tech ecosystems concentrate resources on large enterprises or elite research, while Ballarat directs sustained effort toward small and medium businesses that face rising attacks due to limited defense resources.
Local Programs Build Practical Skills
Federation University and Aiculus run the annual Ballarat Cybersecurity Survey to track local business preparedness, with the 2025 report released in October 2025. The city also offers the Certificate III in Information Technology (Basic Cyber Security Awareness) and seven other beginner-level courses with no mandated prior experience. Bi-monthly CSides Ballarat meetups and the Ballarat Cybersecurity Meetup take place at the Ballarat Hacker Space or the Emerging Technologies Hub, where industry experts deliver talks on topics such as policy-as-code and AI reverse engineering.
BSides Ballarat, scheduled for February 28 to March 1 in 2026 at the Emerging Technologies Hub, covers career entry, network security and Capture the Flag competitions aimed at young people. MRE 2026 will again focus on advanced malware analysis at the same venue.
