Ballarat Tech Community Launches Cybersecurity Training for Small Businesses

Ballarat's local tech and startup scene is expanding cybersecurity awareness through repeated community events and training options aimed at small and medium businesses.

The 2025 Ballarat State of Cyber Security Report, launched in October 2024 by Federation University and Aiculus, surveyed local businesses on cyber preparedness and noted the effects of the Cyber Security Act 2024 on regional organisations. SMBs remain prime targets because they often have fewer defensive resources, a point addressed directly in conference sessions such as 'Small Business, Easier Target'.

Regular meetups and annual conferences anchor the effort

The Ballarat Cybersecurity Meetup runs beginner-friendly talks every two months, while CSides Ballarat meetups add further industry-led sessions at venues including the Ballarat Hacker Space and Federation University's Emerging Technologies Hub. These gatherings form a regional information-sharing network that connects participants across the tech and startup community.

BSides Ballarat, held 28 February-1 March 2026 at the Emerging Technologies Hub, focused on beginner to intermediate skills and included Capture the Flag competitions. The conference draws participants seeking practical awareness rather than advanced research tracks.

Entry-level training supports workforce entry

Seven beginner-friendly cyber security courses with no entry requirements operate in Ballarat, one of them the Certificate III in Information Technology (Basic Cyber Security Awareness). These programs target people new to the field and support skill development in the local startup and small-business environment.

Organisers continue to promote the annual survey collaboration between Federation University and Aiculus as a way to track preparedness and guide future sessions. Local businesses can participate in ongoing meetups and review course listings to strengthen basic defences without prior experience.
