Ballarat will host the technical Malware and Reverse Engineering conference alongside the beginner-focused BSides Ballarat event at the Emerging Technologies Hub in February 2026. These gatherings follow the inaugural BSides Ballarat conference that drew more than 150 attendees in May 2025, the first such BSides event held in regional Victoria outside Melbourne.
Survey and collaboration drive awareness
The annual Ballarat Cybersecurity Survey, run jointly by Federation University and Aiculus, collects data on local business priorities to strengthen regional cyber resilience. Small and medium businesses in Ballarat and Geelong face growing targeting because they operate with fewer defense resources than larger firms, according to reports from the BSides Ballarat site. The survey results help shape practical responses rather than generic national guidance.
Federation University also runs the Ballarat Cybersecurity Meetup series that delivers industry talks every two months at the Ballarat Hacker Space. Seven cybersecurity courses carrying Basic Cyber Security Awareness content are offered through local Registered Training Organisations for learners with no prior experience.
Evidence from recent turnout and course availability
The May 2025 BSides Ballarat event reached full capacity at 150-plus participants, confirming demand for accessible regional programming. That turnout, combined with seven entry-level courses now listed locally, shows measurable uptake in a city that previously lacked dedicated cybersecurity conferences of this scale.
Businesses can register for the 2026 conferences through the Federation University site and review the current Ballarat Cybersecurity Survey at the Aiculus portal to align their own defenses with documented regional risks. The next meetup session is listed for later in the year at the same venue used for prior gatherings.
