The 2025 Ballarat Cybersecurity Survey, released in October 2025, measured local business preparedness under the Cyber Security Act 2024 and identified small and medium businesses as frequent targets because they hold fewer defensive resources than larger firms.
Events anchor the regional calendar
Two major conferences occur each year at the Emerging Technologies Hub. The Malware and Reverse Engineering Conference runs 26-27 February 2026, followed immediately by BSides Ballarat on 28 February-1 March 2026. BSides Ballarat emphasises beginner and intermediate skill building, while the Malware and Reverse Engineering Conference focuses on advanced analysis. These consecutive dates create a single destination week for participants ranging from students to technical specialists.
The Ballarat Cybersecurity Meetup, also known as CSides Ballarat, schedules beginner-friendly sessions every two months at Ballarat Hacker Space. Federation University and FedUni TAFE deliver seven beginner courses with no entry requirements, including the Certificate III in Information Technology (Basic Cyber Security Awareness) and a tuition-free Certificate IV in Cyber Security. The Certificate IV program received $940,000 in government funding to equip a dedicated IT laboratory. These offerings sit alongside the ongoing 2025 survey collaboration that continues to track executive priorities and regional resilience.
